C is for Creative

I know, I know.  Yesterday I tell you to be bored stiff.  Today I say, “Let’s get creative.”  Well, that’s how we balance things, right?  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say, “I’m just not creative.”  You know what?  I have never met a single person that didn’t prove to me that they weren’t creative in some way.

I think it’s because we are made in the image of our… say it with me… CREATOR.  Shocker, I know.  Now, technically, a lot of creativity is imitation.  I know mine is.  I can see something someone else has done, take a new spin on it, make it my own, and voila.  “Creative.”  However, technically, I am just imitating.  I’m ok with that. If I was truly creative, I would see a pile of raw materials and from them come up with something I hadn’t seen made with those materials in the way I chose to do it.  I don’t know if I’ve actually ever done that.  However, I am not going to discount the creative process even if it is imitative.

I think that there is something that happens deep within us when we take the time to create.  Whether it is setting a beautiful table, adding a flick of the wrist as we frost a cake, making a rolled rose to go on a handmade dress, creating our own paper as a backdrop for photography, or painting someone’s portrait, let’s face it, creativity connects our intellect with our emotions in a way that few things do.

I do many things to be creative.  I love to improve our home.  I enjoy sewing and I never grew out of my love for coloring.  Yes, coloring someone else’s pictures counts as being creative! I have friends who bake, who play musical instruments, who garden, and as one of my friends says, “I make babies.”  And they’re cute too!  We all do something.

How are you creative?

  1. I always thought I wasn’t creative, because arts-n-crafts were a scary world to me. I learned only in the past few years that I was letting my perfectionism get in the way of having fun. I’m a very organized person in “real” life, but now I do scrapbooking with my sister, & have found it’s the one place I can be sloppy and it just doesn’t matter! My sister makes gorgeous works of art, & that is so cool. I’m more interested in slapping stuff together any which way. Being creative has become a new kind of freedom for me. Oddly enough, my sister is extremely disorganized in “real” life, yet her art is the one place she pulls it together & makes precision count. We love how creativity has introduced us to complimentary qualities neither of us knew we possessed!

  2. These days, I do jumping jacks instead of double jumpropes during 30 Day Shred. I’m still moving and burning calories. It totally counts.
